Why We Blog

In my English 101 class at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, my students came to a realization--if you want to be good at something you have to practice it. They all mentioned they spent on average 4-5 hours a week on activities they considered themselves good at, but less than an hour a week writing. Why? Because they thought writing only counted when it was for school. So we agreed to try to write more on subjects and topics not related to school. This blog is a forum for all of us to voice our opinions, to be heard, to think and, most importantly to write.

A Trip to the Salebarn!

On Tuesday my Grandfather took his grandsons and great-granddaughters to the Salebarn just as he had did with his kids and his older grandkids. Dominick's stockyark, aka the Salebarn, is located in Opelousas down Hwy. 190 West and is the place to buy and sale livestock. They sale cows, hogs, goats, sheep and horses which are housed in the outside building. This building has hundreds of stalls that contain and separate the animals. Suspended above the stalls is a long catwalk that allows customers to look at the inventory. Horses are kept saddled to round up livestock or to pull dead livestock from out of the stalls. The stock are tagged upon entry to the Salebarn, which indicate grade and quality, and a smiley face indicates a heiffer. Sometimes stock even gives birth at the Salebarn and here is a picture of that but I didn't stay around to see that! The inside building is allocated for the bidding of stock. It's not fancy but it has always looked and stayed this way for years. The chairs that my children are sitting in are the same chairs that I sat in when I was their age.

  1. I think it is really awesome yall have kept up a tradition like that. Even if its just a small thing like a trip to "salebarn" heehee...I like that name...Im sure it still means alot when you can see your children doing the same things you did as a child. It seems like it would make you feel less far away from them. I think parents sometimes forget what is was like to be their children's age. I guess these are good reminders :)
